Deep Hole Drilling
Long, straight, precise bores through shafts and similar components, machined in the same Rock Valley facility as the rest of the part.
Straight, precise bores without sending the part out.
Deep Hole Drilling is one of the more than 32 manufacturing processes fully-integrated in house at TCS, alongside the related Drilling & Tapping process.
Deep hole drilling is the industry-standard process for boring long, straight, precise holes through shafts and similar cylindrical components — typically holes that run much deeper than they are wide, where maintaining straightness and a consistent bore over that length is the central challenge. Because TCS runs this process in-house alongside its other machining, grinding, and heat treating operations, a shaft that needs a deep bore doesn't have to be shipped to a separate specialty supplier for that one operation. We don't publish specific depth-to-diameter ratios, tolerances, or cycle times for this process — those are determined per application by TCS's engineering team.
Integrated with the rest of the shop.
Deep hole drilling and drilling & tapping run as part of TCS's integrated manufacturing floor, positioned alongside CNC machining, grinding, and heat treating so a shaft can move through boring and finishing operations without leaving the building.
Specific equipment brands and models for this process aren't published; the confirmed facts are that it's a named in-house TCS capability and that it operates within the same single-facility model as the rest of the shop.

Matched to the application.
Material selection is driven by each application's engineering requirements — TCS's engineering team helps source, test, and qualify materials for your specific application.
Where deep-drilled bores are used.
Long shaft components requiring a deep, straight bore are common across two of TCS's core markets.
Planned before the bore is cut.
TCS's internal engineering staff uses AutoCAD and Mastercam® to simulate tool paths and sequences for optimum efficiency and accuracy before the first chip is cut — reducing the risk that comes with a long, precise boring operation on an otherwise finished shaft.

Checked for straightness and diameter.
TCS's in-house Vision and CMM measurement systems are used to verify bore straightness and diameter on drilled components, backed by an SPC network that tracks the process over a production run.
